Hockey is a sport that encourages good health and vitality. When it opened in 1990 the Hockey Centre was the first facility in Canberra to prohibit smoking indoors due to the detrimental effects on both smokers and non-smokers. Since then, the community's social and legislative attitudes towards smoking have changed and further studies have confirmed the harmful effects of passive smoking. A growing number of other organisations and sporting venues now exclude smoking from outdoor areas as well.
The board responded to these developments by deciding to extend the prohibition to include all outdoor areas with the boundary fences of the National Hockey Centre at Lyneham and Tuggeeranong Hockey Park. The Board's decision was discussed at the Club President's meeting on August 8th 2005 and endorsed.
The prohibition has been in place at both Lyneham and Tuggeranong since September 1 2005 and includes all indoor and outdoor areas within the boundary fences i.e. grandstands, toilets, changerooms, fields, dugouts, etc.
Smokers are requested to respect this policy and all players and supporters are requested ti support this initiative. Appropriate signage is displayed at gates and around both venues. Anyone found smoking will be asked to extinguish their cigarette or vacate the facility.
