This terrible news has impacted the hockey community around Australia, with many clubs, associations and players expressing their sympathy. ACT’s Glenn Turner, Anna Flanagan and Edwina Bone have all expressed their condolences via Twitter.

This tragic event has been felt throughout the hockey and sporting community. The closeness of the sporting and especially the hockey community is a key strength of its continued survival and development, and it is during these times that we draw together.

As a marked sign of respect and to show our sympathy for the Watkins family and Western Australia’s Hockey community we are asking all first grade teams to wear black arm bands. One minutes silence will also be held prior to the commencement of the first Men’s and Women’s Capital League 1 games on Saturday and Sunday.

We continue to keep the Watkins family and the Hockey WA community in our thoughts and prays during this time.

Women's Final

Ainslie Avalanche 2 defeat Stromlo Senators 2 (Shootout to decide the match)

The women's finals could not have been more evenly matched. Both teams turned up determined to take the Championship and both were playing to win. Ainslie Avalanche took the lead with Karina Lucucs and Steph Kindon both executing brilliant goals to give the Avalanche a comfortable lead of 2-nil. Stromlo Senators fought back hard and thanks to Most Valuable Player of the Final Kate Gilmore and Jenna Cartwright the score was bought back to 2-2. The remainder of the match was fought hard with both teams going close to clinching the lead, however a gallant effort in defence meant neither could break through.

During the game breaks, sponsor of the Stromlo Senators, Podiatry Professionals held some entertainment with "The Flash" competition - who is the fastest men's Capital League 1 athlete, and an accuracy competition - providing the opportunity for junior athletes to try their accuracy when shooting goals. This provided an entertainment break from the quality hockey being played.

With a draw at the final whistle the game was taken into extra time, 5 minutes each way and the dead lock continued. A one-on-one shoot-out determined the final outcome of the match. The Senators started strong scoring their first two attempts with both goals scored thanks to strength in beating the keeper. The Avalanche came back to even the score after 5 attempts scoring on the third and the fifth. At the sudden death point, the Senators missed shoot and the Avalanche Capitan Edwina Bone secured the win, scoring the final goal. Both teams played exceptionally well, and the game was thoroughly enjoyed by all.

Men's Final

Stromlo Senators 3 defeat Taylor Titans 2

Having been delayed due to the extension of the women's final, the men commenced their final slightly later. The delay only made the teams more determined as both teams came out firing ready to fight for the win. Cameron Bailey-Price opened the scoring for Taylor Titans. The Stromlo Senators came back within minutes with Tristan Kearns executing a brilliant goal to tie up the match. The Senators extended their lead thanks to Evan Gilson, however the Titans came back to tie it up again through a brilliant goal from Jack Wallace. 

For most of the game both teams were tied-up and it looked like the game was heading to extra time and a shoot-out. In the dying minutes Matthew Hotchkis sealed the match with yet another brilliant goal, and the Senators claimed the title. Most Valuable Player of the Final was awarded to Adam Baxter thanks to his brilliant strength in defensive. It was a brilliant game of hockey, played at the highest level, proving once again the success of the CPL.

Thanks to the Major Sponsors PowerHouse Physiotherapy who provided game break entertainment for the men's final. A visit from everyone's favourite superheros - SuperGirl, Iron Man, Storm, and Captain America, who played some hockey before injury struck them all. PowerHouse Phyiotherapy came out and saved the day, fixing all the athletes, proving they can treat anyone.

It was a fantastic evening of hockey and was thoroughly enjoyed by all. Thank you to all those who braved the weather to come out and support all those involved in the Grand Finals. We look forward to future success with the CPL running again next year, bigger and better than ever.

The Awards Presentation Night will be held at the Pavilion on Northbourne on Saturday 19-May. Invitations will be sent out to all athletes, coaches, umpires and officials, with remaining tickets being available for purchase later. More information regarding the evening will be released soon.

The primary objective of Women’s Masters Hockey in Australia is to provide inter-state, and where possible, national representative competition for those hockey players aged 35 years and over.

Throughout the competition, no single team has dominated, increasing the level of anticipation for the finals. With the addition of mid-game entertainment and activities in the breaks, as well as the music and the starting of the junior competition, this Friday evening is set to be a cracker of a night.

Women's Grand Final - 6:30pm

Ainslie Avalanche vs. Stromlo Senators

The Avalanche began their CPL campaign with a clean sweep in the first full round of competition, only having a single goal scored against them by their grand final opponent, Stromlo Senators. In the second round the team secured two wins in an over-time shot out, and a final round loss missing their captain Edwina Bone due to injury. The Avalanche will be returning to full strength as they enter the final. Stromlo have blitzed their opponents, with their only defeats being against the Avalanche. This final could face up to be a goal scoring frenzy, with leading competition goal scorer Steph Kindon taken the field for Avalanche against the Senators key goal scorers Kate Dooley and Jenna Cartwright.

During the game breaks of the women's final, Sponsor of Stromlo Senators Podiatry Professionals will be holding some entertainment and competitions. Make sure you are ready during the first break to see the Podiatry Professionals "The Flash" competition. This will determine Hockey ACT's fastest male first grade player pitting one representative from each first grade team against each other in a 75m race, to take the title of fastest man! The second break will involve some lucky junior players in the Podiatry Professional "Sharpshooter" competition. A number of juniors will be invited to prove how accurate their shooting is from halfway. Make sure you give the team at Podiatry Professionals in Turner a call to treat any pain or injuries you may experience this season. It is your Elite Sports Podiatry practice in the City!

Men's Final - 8:00pm

Stromlo Senators vs. Taylor Titans

The men have experience fierce competition through the 6 rounds of competition. The competition has seen a plethora of goals being scored by all teams, and anticipation of this continuing into the finals is no exception. The Senators stand at the top of the table, scoring a total of 26 goals and only suffering a single defeat in the round games with an over-time shoot out against their grand final opponents. Player/Coach Seyi Onitiri is controlling his team in defence and feels confident for success in the final. The Titans have had less success in their campaign, suffering three defeats. The Titans will be confident entering the finals, with the competition leading goal scorer Iain Davidson ready to extend his competition lead.

During the game breaks in the men's final, our Main Sponsor PowerHouse Physiotherapy will be holding some entertainment and competitions. The first break will provide entertainment through an exciting show of the PowerHouse Physiotherpists in action. What kind of action? You’ll have to make sure you are at the game to see! The second break will be another opportunity for supports to try their hand in the PowerHouse Physiotherapy "Sharpshooter" competition. Similar to the first opportunity, supporters will be invited to take the field and show how accurate their shots on goal can be. PowerHouse Physiotherapy prides themselves on being passionate in their aim to assist athletes in achieving their sporting goals by helping them back onto the field as quickly and as safely as possible.

Make sure you come out on Friday evening to support all our teams taking the field in the finals. With our quality umpires, coaches and athletes on display it is shaping up to be one night of hockey you don't want to miss!

Brian D Bowen was awarded Life Membership of Hockey ACT in 1990. He passed away on Tuesday 24 April after a brief illness. Brian’s funeral will take place on Tuesday 1 May at 11am at All Souls Anglican Church, in Chapman (56 Perry Drive, Chapman).

Brian was originally from Ceylon (now Sri Lanka). He represented Ceylon as player in the 1960’s and later as an international umpire. He was very involved in establishing indoor hockey in the ACT and worked for many years on our indoor committee. Brian also coached ACT teams at National Championships and umpired in our local competitions. Brian was affiliated with St Patricks Hockey Club.

Ewen MacKinnon also passed away on Tuesday 24 April. He was awarded Life Membership in 1972. His funeral will take place on Tuesday 1 May at 3pm at Norwood Park Crematorium (Sandford Street Mitchell).

Ewen worked extensively as a volunteer with Hockey ACT with our junior committee and on the Executive of the ACT Hockey Association (now the Hockey ACT Board). Along with his Hockey ACT Life Membership, he was also awarded Life Membership of United Hockey Club for his work with United and previously with Presbyterian Hockey Club (before it amalgamated to become United).

We ask the Hockey ACT community to keep in their thoughts and prayers the Bowen and MacKinnon families during this time.

Men: 11am ACT 2 – TAS 3

Both teams turned up desperately wanting to come away with the win, however from the outset Tasmania came out firing. ACT appeared to lack their past radiance, being unable to find their previous form. Tasmania opened the scoring in the 13^th minute taking an early lead. Jacob Randell responded in the 19^th minute taking advantage of a mis-trap by Tasmania, and beating the goal keeper in a one on one. The score was 1-1 at half time.

The second half was played in similar style, Tasmania were able to take advantage of the space and opportunities the deflated ACT team gave them, resulting in two more goals in the second half. Jacob Randell scored his second goal of the match from field play, keeping ACT’s hopes alive. Unfortunately, ACT couldn’t find match winning form, and will now play in the 7^th & 8^th classification match against Northern Territory tomorrow at 9am.

Women: 11am ACT 3 – TAS 2

The game commenced with both teams appearing disjointed and scrappy in the first half. Neither team looked inspiring, with loose defence and a lack of execution upon the opportunities presented, with the score remaining nil all at the half-time break. Both teams started the second half rejuvenated, coming out with much tighter form and commitment to the play.

Tasmania opened the scoring, striking early in 39^th and 43^rd minute to take the lead to 2-0. ACT responded upping the tempo with Amy Arnott scoring a brilliant goal in 47^th minute, followed by Emma Lomas in 61^st minute to bring the score back to 2-all. Continuing perseverance paid-off with determined Laura Gray sealing the win for ACT. ACT will now take on the slick Western Australia team, at 11am tomorrow morning.

Men: 9am ACT 2 v WA 5

Once again the Men commenced strongly, dominating play and shutting down the continuing Western Australia attack. In the 12minute WA took their chance and converted a breakaway goal. Play returned to ACT dominance, yet the team was unable to convert any opportunities thanks to WA's strength in defence. Another goal was scored just before half-time taking their lead to 2-nil.

ACT came out determined in the second half executing plays with strong team work resulting in a fantastic goal to Liam Hackett-Hanson 2minutes in. WA showed determination to answer back with a goal from a well-executed penalty corner. Although ACT continued to show perseverance they failed to capitalise on the opportunities until Michael Jones converted the final goal of the game. The final score was 5 – 2, to WA. On Wednesday ACT Men will take on Victoria at 3pm, who are currently on a winning streak.

The ACT Women had more than the dominant Queensland team to compete with yesterday as weather conditions threatened rain all game. Queensland took control early scoring their first goal from a penalty corner in the 9th minute. ACT fought back hard, maintaining their intensity and sticking to the game plan, before Queensland struck again before half time, taking the score to 2-0.

The second half was much the same, with both teams battling for supremacy. ACT utilised their short passes and air skills well, working in their favour, however Queensland continued their strength in attack and defence, keeping the pressure on ACT for the reminder of the game. The ACT Women will take on WA on Wednesday at 1pm.

Despite the disappointment of defeat, both teams have shown continued skill and perseverance in their games. Good luck on Wednesday!
