Mick Griffin

Mick Griffin started playing hockey in the ACT for Central in the late 1960’s. He went on to play for Central through until the late 1990’s when he retired to play Masters. Mick was never an elite player and would never play representative hockey for the ACT, yet he has become one of the largest contributors to the association.

Mick’s contribution comes in the form of electrical services. In 1997 when Mick started his own business he wanted to give back to the association and volunteered his services to assist with the maintenance of the lighting systems at Lyneham. This role has expanded greatly since that time.

Mick has installed or upgraded the lights on all five outdoor pitches as well as the indoor hall at Lyneham. Mick installed the light system for the Kjar, Powell and Taylor Fields. Mick installed the upgraded system for the Carter Field in 2005 and installed the new LED systems for the Ray Brown Indoor Stadium and the Watt Field.

Mick has also installed, repaired and upgraded the scoreboards for all five pitches as well as the scoreboards in the indoor hall. His knowledge has extended to assist with the installation of water systems and upgrade the light timing systems.

Not only has Mick been able to supply time to these projects but has also worked with suppliers to secure parts and globes to assist with the ongoing maintenance of the systems. At any one time HACT has 220 globes being utilised across facilities with each globe retailing from $300-$500. Mick has been able to work with suppliers to ensure that over his tenure HACT have not been required to pay for a single globe replacement.

Mick has openly discussed how nervous he gets every time HACT have a major event on with fear that the lights might have issues such is his pride for the work he has done.

Mick continues to offer his knowledge, advise, expertise and time to assist Hockey ACT with ongoing maintenance issues, a service that he has provided for the best part of 25 years. While most won’t recognise Mick the countless hours he has spent at the top of a cherry picker in freezing temperatures, upgrading systems in a voluntary capacity have been invaluable for the association.

Mick Griffin is a quiet and unassuming person who has patiently gone about his work and made one of the most amazing contributions to Hockey in the ACT. By any standard Mick’s contribution to Hockey ACT has provided outstanding value, over a considerable time and his contribution has been exceptional. For these reasons it is recommended that Mick Griffin receive the associations highest honour, and be awarded Life Membership of Hockey ACT.
