2026 CL1 Men Preview
The 2026 Hockey ACT competition starts this weekend with the first game to push back on Friday night at 6:15pm.

The Duncan’s Plumbing Capital League One Men’s Competition is set for another exciting season in 2026. Reigning premiers Wests will be looking to go back-to-back after their thrilling 3–2 Grand Final victory over minor premiers Central in 2025.
The competition will also expand this year with the addition of Goulburn, who enter the men’s competition following a dominant 2025 season and will be eager to make an immediate impact.
Likely Top Four:
Wests will be aiming to defend their premiership with a largely settled squad heading into 2026. The return of Owen Chivers adds further strength to the lineup, and head coach Adam Baxter will be eager to build on the momentum of a successful 2025 campaign.
Central will look to continue their impressive run and push to reclaim the trophy in September. The additions of Fin Hegyi and Lachie Crowle bring valuable international experience to the squad, and when combined with the continued development of their emerging talent, Central shapes as a strong contender once again this season.
St Patrick’s have continued to build on their squad depth with the return of Sim Kragh and the additions of Ryan Cartwright and Ozzie Cameron. With a lineup featuring strong ACT representation and experienced leaders, the side will be well equipped to challenge for the trophy in 2026.
ANU could emerge as the underdogs of the competition. With a relatively unchanged squad, head coach Ben Bishop will be looking to harness the group’s cohesion and develop the side into a genuine finals contender.

The focus for this year’s CL1 squad will be to atone for last year’s disappointing grand final defeat. While the group has lost a couple of key players, Fin Hegyi returns from Holland and Lachie Crowle joins the squad from New Zealand. The inclusion of Fin and Lachie will be complemented by the continued integration of talented youngsters Lane Haymen, Samuel McKean, Eamon Shiel and Harry Clark. We’re incredibly excited to be back competing in the CL1 competition. It’s been a long time coming, and while there is still plenty of growth ahead for this group, we’re confident our boys will be competitive and hold their own. This step up also provides a fantastic opportunity for our players to gain valuable exposure and experience in a very strong competition. |

Can’t pinpoint just one —a number of exciting rising stars coming through the ranks this season, and their development has been a real highlight for the club. With six players selected in the Under 21s team — Jack Evans, Jake McCarthy, Lachlan Mylchreest, Finlay Morris, Ozzie Cameron, and Ryan Cartwright — it highlights the strength of our junior pathway and the quality emerging through the system. We also have younger talent pushing through, including Shay Leonard, Jonte Platten, and Hugh Evans, who were all strong performers in the ACT Under 18s team last year. Their experience at representative level, combined with their hunger and work ethic, adds further depth and excitement to the group as they continue their development. |

We head into this season with strong belief and high expectations. With new coach Pat Keir at the helm, there’s a real sense of energy and direction around the group. We’ve got a great mix of youth and experience, including six players who have been selected for the Under 21s team ACT team as well as multiple players looking to break into the Canberra Chill Squad. We have promising young juniors coming through who are pushing hard, and there’s genuine competition for positions right across the squad. That internal competition is already lifting standards at training and will only strengthen us throughout the year. The goal is clear — we’re aiming for a top four finish and to secure a spot in the semi-finals. With the talent, work ethic, and balance we have in this group, we’re confident we can make a strong impact this season. |
