CANBERRA CHILL GET THE DOUBLE IN PERTH
The Canberra Chill sides headed west to take on the Perth Thundersticks at the Perth Hockey Stadium on Sunday 19th October. Rain was forecasted and set in but that didn’t dampen the spirits of the Chill.
The men opened the afternoon against Perth in very wet conditions with Aiden Dooley finding the net at the 11-minute mark and converting his shootout to take the lead 2-0. The men battled on in the conditions and kept it flowing with some silky skill from Davis Atkin to find the net and convert his shootout to take the scoreline to 4-0 heading into half time. Unfortunately, an injury to Anand Gupte ruled him out for the remainder of the match which saw the men play with one less rotation in their sub line. Jake Staines came out firing after half time with a goal in the 50th minute and two in the 53rd minute. Perth substituted their goalkeeper for an extra field player but this didn’t break the men as James Day found the net against his 2024 team to close out the scoring. Final score 8-0 to the Canberra Chill.
The women followed on with a thrilling and tight match with Ellie Baldwin on debut for the Chill. The sides went end to end with the Chill finding the net first with a beautiful team build up goal and Mikayla Evans launching it into the net to open the scoring. The Perth Thundersticks fired back a minute later to level the playing field. The Chill fought on all the way to the final siren, goalkeeper Alyssa Smith was an integral part of the side making many important and world class saves. Anna Crowley, Olivia Martin and Georgie Smithers made many crucial tackles as well as Olivia Shannon, Amy Lawton and Mikayla Evans lighting it up through the midfield and striker lines. The sides finished full time at a 1-1 draw taking them into shootouts where Alyssa Smith proved too calm and collected, saving many shootouts and saving the day, clinching the win in sudden death. Shootout goals to Olivia Shannon x 3 and Lauren Yee. Final score 1 (4) – 1 (3) to the Canberra Chill. Player of the Match awarded to Alyssa Smith.
This Sunday October 26th the sides return home to take on the Brisbane Blaze. The Men up first at 1:30pm followed by the women at 3:15pm at the EPC Solar Hockey Stadium.
