JAMES DAY HANGS UP THE STICK

For the final time, James Day will take the field for the Canberra Chill and the Hockey One League at the EPC Solar Hockey Stadium on Friday night.

James first debuted for the Canberra Lakers in 2013 against WA in Melbourne and went on to play 36 games before the league revamped to what is now known as the Hockey One League. The league rebranded in 2019, and the sides became the Canberra Chill, Day debuted for the Chill in 2019 against the Brisbane Blaze in Canberra.

James ticked over his 50th game for the Canberra Lakers/Canberra Chill in his final game for the Chill in 2022 before switching to the Perth Thundersticks in 2023 and 2024.

Returning to the Canberra Chill in 2025, Day decided he wanted to finish his career back where it started 12 years ago.

Day said “ It was always the plan to finish playing where it started, it sucks that we haven’t had the best year, but I feel like it’s the right time.”

Only weeks before James was due to head back to Canberra for the Hockey One season, he suffered a bad injury which resulted in a broken eye socket that required surgery. With his mind set on continuing ahead with the season, he headed into surgery and began his recovery. Returning to the field with new head gear before his custom face mask arrived, he was determined to make it back on the pitch.

Locally James played for the Old Canberrans Hockey Club before moving to Perth and playing for the Melville City Hockey Club.

The Hockey ACT community will join together this Friday night to farewell James “Daisy” Day.
